Satire 


Satire is a literary work which is employed to point out the weakness or deficiencies of individuals or institution.in order to hold them up to ridicule . In its literary form ,it is used as a vehicle to arouse amusement by using humour.

The manner of the satirist is very different from that of the lyrics poet's

The satirist avoid giving direct expressions to contempt , hatred or any such unpleasant feelings . They employs polite irony to criticize and evoke laughter.


Satire gained prominence in the Restoration period and was perfected in the subsequent age by Alexander Pope , Jonathan Swift , and Addison . This  is the main factor which played. A critical role in the Augustan Age to make satire the predominant literary form .


The most important and interesting factor of Satire are discussed below


Firstly, was the coming together of politics and literature in the Augustan period. The process had already started in the Restoration period which by its artificial gaity had paved the way for social criticism.


Secondly,During this period London had grown in pleasure resort for the courtyard poet ; the emergence and popularity of coffee houses and parks , served as places for social interactions . In this way the spirit was right for satire because in such a type of frivolous society judging and condemning became the common practice which also indirectly encouraged Satire.



Thirdly, With the Restoration of monarchy in England witnessed royalism in its full glory and the natural tendency to attack the old institution of puritanism found its best expression in Satires.the Restoration of monarchy had survived the old political spirit of opposition which gave birth to political satires . Particularly those of Dryden.


Lastly , the influence of French writer Baileau was also instrumental in the growth of the satire , France at that time was producing exceptional Satires which encourages the English writers in the same direction.
